There are 4,500 10-13th century temples and pagodas on this UNESCO World Heritage site on the dusty Irrawaddy River plain.
From any vantage point, they appear in the distance. Some crumbling, some restored, some small, some grand.
The interiors of the temples contained Buddha images in every shape and size, as well as frescoes and murals.
Below is a photo of children who live in a bamboo house behind our hotel and found us walking nearby and took us to temples in the fields, including some with the most beautiful and intact frescoes.
