The teak bridge

U Bein's Bridge, is 1,300 yard teak footbridge bridge that stretches across Thaungthaman Lake in Myanmar. It is 200 years old, mostly original, and still strong - having been built with curves to better withstand the wind.

Local people use it to commute to and from villages on one side, to work in or around Mandalay on the other side, as well as from, to and between monasteries on both sides.

People are walking, carrying food and goods on their heads, taking bicycles across, and at various rest stops on the bridge they are selling food snacks and ice cream.

There are five sheltered rest areas along the bridge's span where palm toddy might be one of the refreshments sold.

We, tourists, mixed in with the local life. We also took a boat ride to survey and photograph the scene from the water.
